Okay, that’s a crap title.
Anyway, apparently Portland was rated the #10 most walkable city in the nation. People often ask me what it is about pdx that I like so much. And while there are a plethora of reasons, the fact that I do not need a car is key. I enjoy walking. I hate spending time in cars. Seems simple enough, eh?
I apologise for the picture. It’s actually a screen shot, but my neighbourhood (Buckman) is number seven in the city. I loves it here!
If you’re curious to see your own score, or more about Portland’s the website is http://www.walkscore.com.

I looked up walkscore.com’s comments about Atlanta (so I might be interested?
and it said both areas I visited are pretty walkable. Not true. While I suppose there are sidewalks and restaurants nearby, those areas weren’t really that pleasant to walk in. I’d guess it’s not entirely a quantitative thing.
How’s Portland’s public transit?

Atlanta?? That’s so far south! Not to mention it’s actually in the south.
As far as I know, the site’s rating isn’t so much for how nice of a walk it is, rather how little you need a car. The nearness of amenities is really what boosts the score.
PDX has great public transportation. Between TriMet, walking, biking (also a great city for) and zip car, there’s really no reason I need to own a car… which is exactly what I’m looking for in a city.
And being here a year, I have yet to actually use a zip car.
